Ewing stuÂdied law at MarÂisÂchal CollÂege in AberÂdeen. In 1855, he joined the arÂmy, risÂing to the rank of lieuÂtenÂant colÂoÂnel, and reÂceivÂing a meÂdal for the camÂpaign in ChiÂna in 1869. His true love was muÂsic, though, which he stuÂdied in HeiÂdelÂberg, GerÂmaÂny. A memÂber of the HarÂmonÂic Choir in AberÂdeen, he brought his newÂly writÂten tune ?Ewing? to pracÂtice one night, and that choir was the first to evÂer sing it.
